Short-Term Running Goals:
I really need to develop new goals. It's been a busy year both professionally (field work) and personally (wedding, move,...) It's time to get back on track and commit to some racing goals for next year.
Long-Term Running Goals: The long-term goals are much easier--to stay healthy and happy!
Personal: Live in Broad Run, VA with my wife; work at US Geological Survey. Baby cat running around to catch mice in our old house.

pm: half hour lapswim, followed by gym.
I was running out of energy at the gym when I attempted some butterflies. This was a mistake. I commenced a rep while simultaneously turning my head (still with low energy) and my back popped rather disturbingly near my neck. I've had pain since and am considering visiting a chiropractor. Not fun repeatedly waking up from shocks of pain... | Add Comment |
| | no running miles today, but I got in about 10 miles of swift hiking. | Add Comment |
| | 4 mile hike in the am at Big Schloss, and 6 miles on the WOD in the evening at 8:00 pace. My back feels ok while running, provided I maintain good form and look quasi-straight ahead. | Add Comment |
| | pm: 45 minute lapswim. Struggled to remain not-overly-frustrated with the old men I shared a lane with. Followed by one hour lifting with focus on back and bi's. | Add Comment |

early pm: 6 miles on the wod. I pushed it a bit and still only cranked 8:00's. Gonna have to be patient for a little while...
later: half hour gym workout. My first time back on chest after tweaking my back really bad last friday (second chiro visit today). | Add Comment |
| | early pm: 2nd Chiro visit. Equally as scary, but the adjustment was easier this time around. I have to decide soon how many times I'm willing to go... evening: Drove to Great Falls from work and ran 1.5 miles to wake myself up. Climbed with my good friend Dan at Aid Box and put up some pretty encouraging climbs. Also did some of my first aid climbing, which is friggin exhausting. Followed by delicious pizza and beer at the Lost Dog. | Add Comment |

am: Biked to work. 15 miles of glorious WOD riding. First time ever with contacts in my eyes. It was like a dream...
pm: Biked home. My biking muscles are feeling surprisingly strong...it's a bit strange.
This weekend I'm off to CT to get some free dental work done by my college suite-mate. It likely won't be the most active weekend I've ever had. | Comments(1) |
| | 6 miles on the WOD out in Reston. I hadn't planned on doing a noon-time run today, but it was just so freaking nice I couldn't resist. I felt happy and strong. | Add Comment |
| | Approximately 4-5 miles this morning near Plainville, CT. I'm visiting my dentist friend and his wife for the weekend--pretty state, that Connecticut... | Add Comment |

am: 3 mile out-and-back this morning on the beautiful WOD. We're stuck in a gorgeous high-pressure system right now and it's just rockin' my socks off. I was actually chilly this morning! Not sure if it's the weather or what, but I had a surprisingly strong run this morning with a best mile at 6:28 and an average at 7:28. A great way to start the week.
pm: about an hour at the Y doing a generalized upper body workout. lots of reps, less weight, making sure everything's up to snuff. | Add Comment |

am: Biked ~15 miles to work. I packed lots of food, running clothes, swimming gear, and work clothes for tomorrow. ~20 lbs on my back. Felt sorta goofy and extended my ride by about 10 minutes.
pm: Just over a mile of open-water swimming. Goodbye $4/time dirty high school swimming pool, hello nice people at Lake Anne who let me walk through their house to go swimming. Score.

noon: Just barely cool enough to do a lunch run today. I did a few minor intervals, but nothing crazy. but that was enough to take my breath away pretty good in this humidity. probably ran something like 7:45's.
pm: biked 15 miles home and felt TOUGH. It was great! | Add Comment |
| | pm: Biked 3 miles to Lake Anne and swam ~1.4 miles. The swim will be quite easy for me on sunday. I'm just curious now to see how well I do with transitions. I did a mock swim-bike transition after swimming last night, and it was pretty fast and smooth. | Comments(1) |
| | am: 6 miles on the WOD west of home. I was pretty sluggish in the legs this morning, which is likely because of a rather hard swim last night. I'll bike home nice 'n easy tonight and then take tomorrow off. | Add Comment |

Luray Triathlon 01:34:40, Place overall: 50, Place in age division: 8 | |
This marks my first triathlon! I enjoyed it as much as or even more than I had anticipated. It was very nice to incorporate a bit of the swimming and biking I'm doing all the time into something competetive. I decided to do the sprint distance for my first, which was likely a smart option (.4 mile swim, 16.5 mile bike, 5k run). I would have been fine doubling the swim and the run, but doing 16.5 miles x 2 on the bike would have been painful. I've already got another one on the schedule for October 4th! Whoot whoot!

| | 4 miles on some gravel roads up the Squamish Valley (~1 hour from Squamish, BC). It's just not fair. No one should be able to live in such a beautiful place. | Add Comment |
| | 8 mile trail run, also up Squamish Valley. Old growth temperate rainforest. Good glory it was purty! | Add Comment |
| | 4 miles trail running near a campsite along the Columbia River Hwy, Or. | Add Comment |
| | 7 miles up Logan Canyon. Ran on that cool trail on the north side of the road (on those big canal pipelines), crossed the road and river at the Second Practice (climbing) Wall, and ran back on the River Trail with start and finish in the Island. The elevation actually got me this time, but oh what fun. | Add Comment |
| | 6 miles on the shoreline trail of Chicago. Mmm...so much grilling on that trail... | Add Comment |
